French accountants do not prepare taxes for individuals!

The terms for French professionals are not comparable to those for American practitioners. For example, in America, one would go to an accountant to prepare their tax return. But this isn’t the case in France. French “expert comptables” are used for companies. They calculate various VAT taxes and focus on the very complicated rules regarding employee salaries. Usually, they are not allowed to represent you in front of the tax authorities. So who does? It is a fiscal avocat (fiscal lawyer) who prepares French tax disclosures. Yes, some French expert comptables will prepare an individual return, but it not really their expertise.

In America, for estate planning advice, one would go to an attorney for estate planning guidance, but in France, it is the notary (notaire) who is responsible for succession planning. Sometimes the notary works in conjunction with an attorney specializing in Americans. There are not many of those in France, as American citizens are really complicated, and they need to have a high level of expertise across multi-jurisdictions.

The key to any professional is that they are familiar with applying French rules to Americans and American rules to France.
